Enamel jewelry has a reputation for being delicate. That reputation is partly earned. But if you understand what enamel actually is and how it behaves, taking care of it is not complicated.
Enamel is glass fused to metal. That gives it the vivid, light-catching color that makes enamel jewelry look the way it does. But the glass-like structure means that if a piece takes a sharp knock, the surface can chip. The care instructions follow directly from that.
The main rules
Take your jewelry off when you do not need to wear it. Before the gym, before washing dishes, before bed. This removes the situations where pieces are most likely to get knocked or scratched.
Do not use chemical jewelry cleaners. They strip surface finishes and can affect the enamel itself. A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough for regular cleaning. Dry the piece completely before putting it away.
The biggest threat most people overlook: perfume and hand sanitizer. The alcohol and chemicals in these products break down gold finishes faster than almost anything else. Put your jewelry on after you have applied perfume, not before.
Store pieces separately. When enamel pieces rub against each other or against harder metals, they scratch. A soft pouch or a jewelry box with individual compartments is the right setup.
About the gold finish
