Chicago does not always come up first in conversations about American craft and artisan culture. New York and Los Angeles tend to get more attention. But for anyone who has spent time in the city's making community, the Chicago craft scene is serious and well worth knowing.
Why Chicago works for small makers
The economics matter. Chicago has a lower cost of living than most other major American cities, which means independent makers and small-batch brands can sustain a studio here without the financial pressure that pushes people out of New York or San Francisco. That breathing room creates a culture where quality can take priority over volume.
It also means there is a real community of makers here, across jewelry, ceramics, textiles, and other crafts, who have the space to experiment and develop their work over time.
The One of a Kind Show
Chicago has one of the strongest juried craft show circuits in the United States. The One of a Kind Show, held twice a year at The Mart, is nationally recognized as one of the most selective venues for artisan work in the country. The jury process is competitive. The standard of work on the floor reflects that.
Selling at this show is not the same as selling online. You are standing in front of the customer. They are holding the piece, asking questions, deciding in real time. That process gives you feedback that no analytics dashboard provides.
Wild Amra has been part of this community since the beginning. Chicago shaped how the work developed.
What Chicago-made actually means
It means the piece was made here, by someone who lives here. Not assembled from components shipped from overseas. Not produced in a facility in another state under a brand headquartered here.
At Wild Amra, every piece is made in our Chicago studio. You can read more about the brand and the process here. And if you are ever at the One of a Kind Show, come find us.
